About Matthew Kayne:
He is 30 years old and was born with cerebral palsy. He went to Middlesex University and studied for a BSc Honours in Computing and Network Systems. He loves going out with friends, socialising and meeting new people, but he also volunteers in the community; it gives him real pleasure to help other people who need more help than he does. He loves DJing and music, and he lives life to the full, making every day as enjoyable as he can. He loves going away on holiday and doing lots of nice activities – but when he does go on holiday, he needs to pay for two full-time carers to help him with personal care.
He needs to pay for his powered wheelchair maintenance and servicing costs. If it stops working, the company call-out fee is £50 and part costs will generally add up to £400, though can go anywhere as high as £1000 depending on what the problem is. When his powered wheelchair breaks down, he uses his manual wheelchair but needs people to push him, which robs him of valuable independence.
He has launched a campaign for safer pavements in London, for which he has shot a two-part video on YouTube.
He is committed to living a normal and happy life, and to helping others in similar situations to him.
